Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Hi there! On Saturday morning I hopped on a train, then another train, then a bus to go to Luxembourg! And it was so cool.

Even though Belgium and Luxembourg border each other and everything in Europe is so close and interconnected, it still takes 5 hours to get to Luxembourg. Usually, all 5 hours would be on 3 trains but there’s construction going on in Luxembourg so I got to take a bus too! This part was kind of cool because, on all of my other adventures, I've only ever arrived via train so it was cool to be able to drive through the outskirts of cities!
The day started early so that I could have as much time as possible in Luxembourg and it was completely worth it!! The whole time I was walking around, I was in awe. I was spinning in circles the whole time I was walking because there were so many cool things to see and I didn’t want to miss anything by not turning around!
This whole day I didn’t really plan to do anything, I just wanted to walk as much of the city as possible and that’s exactly what I did. I got off my bus and started walking through the “newer” town of Luxembourg (Grund) and unfortunately, it started pouring rain. So I took this opportunity to pop into cute boutiques and shop around while waiting for the rain to stop.

Once the rain let up I started walking towards the more historical parts of Luxembourg (Ville Haute) and it was absolutely gorgeous.

Luxembourg is built of an upper part and a lower part, and while I had read that before I arrived, I didn’t really figure that there was actually a massive drop and a wall between the two.

The entire city was split between these two elevations so no matter where you were walking you were either going uphill or downhill or even sometimes both. This city is definitely not for the weak-legged!!

But the hills were worth it for the views!! I started at the upper part, at the Bock Casemates. The history of the Casemates goes back to 963 (like without a 1 at the front!!! Actually in nine-hundred and sixty-three!!) when Count Sigfried built a castle. In 1745 this acted as a foundation for the Casemates. Throughout a series of tunnels there is a crypt, a dungeon, a massive "well" that is really just a hole that goes all the way down to the water and some rooms that were occupied by soldiers during the French attacks in the 18th century.
Looking down looked absolutely beautiful so I decided to make my way down. I found a gorgeous park with a nice river flowing through it and trees with their leaves changing!!

After the park, I went to get some lunch at an “authentic Luxembourg” restaurant. Or that’s what it says on their sign at least. And it was the perfect cozy restaurant. I had some pumpkin soup and watched the colourful leaves fall off the trees outside. This day in Luxembourg was really the perfect fall day, while it was raining, it wasn’t too cold and the grey skies made all of the leaves that much more vibrant. The train ride in as well was through forests of colour and it made me so happy!!!

After lunch, I walked up the biggest hill I had faced yet. There were 3 routes I could choose from to get to the top of the hill and the options truly were steep, steeper, or steepest. At the top, were more gorgeous views then I walked around to see all of the sites that Luxembourg has to offer.
I saw the Ducal Palace.

The Monument of Remembrance, or the "Golden Lady".

The famous Pont Adolphe, and I even got to walk over it on the second level (the pedestrian level).

And a couple more nice pieces of architecture!

Before leaving I had to go to the famous Conrad cafe and have a piece of carrot cake to finish off the perfect fall day!!
This might have been the coolest place I’ve been to yet. It’s not an exaggeration that everywhere I turned there was more cool stuff to look that. It doesn’t really seem like I did all that much but I had so much fun walking the ENTIRE city (all 31,000 steps of it). The feeling of Luxembourg was cozy and friendly and the fall colours only made it all the better!!
